Amelia Bedelia is a maid/housekeeper who is frequently confused by figures of speech and words that sound (or are spelled) the same but have different meanings.  Her employers, Mr. and Mrs. Rogers, have to be careful when giving her instructions because she takes everything literally.  For example, when they tell her to “draw the drapes,” she thinks that she’s supposed to draw a picture of them instead of closing them.  When they ask her to make a “date cake,” she thinks that they’re talking about dates from the calendar instead of fruit.  Because Amelia Bedelia gets confused by the expressions that her employers use, she often messes up simple chores, but she makes up for her mistakes in other ways, especially because she is an excellent baker.

The Amelia Bedelia series is fun and humorous, and it can be a good way to introduce kids to figures of speech and words with multiple meanings.  The author, Peggy Parish, also wrote the Liza, Bill, and Jed Mysteries.

According to Wikipedia, Peggy Parish’s nephew, Herman Parish, continued the series after her death.
