The heroes in this series are Miss Bianca and Bernard, a pair of mice that work for the Prisoners’ Aid Society of Mice, which helps human prisoners by either keeping them company or helping them to escape from captivity. In the beginning, Miss Bianca is not a member of the society. She is the pampered pet of an ambassador’s son, giving her opportunities to travel along with her owner. She lives in a porcelain pagoda, writes poetry, and wears gold and silver chains around her neck. She only joins the society when Bernard is sent to recruit her. Bernard lives in the pantry of the ambassador’s house. Later, she becomes the chairwoman of the society, and eventually, she receives the title of Perpetual Madam President and Secretary.

The captive people that the society rescues are adults as well as children. Locations in the stories are often vague, and some take place in fictional countries. There is nothing realistic or educational about the places they go; it’s all just for fun and adventure.

The books were later made into a pair of Disney Movies, The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under, but the stories in both of those movies were very different from the stories in the books.

The author of the books is Margery Sharp.
